Job Description

Support Center - Irving

The Assistant Claims Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing Michaels claims administration and assisting with insurance programs. Management of Worker’s Compensation and Property claims represent the majority of this role.

Major Activities

Monitor injury counselor load, assist, and train as required

  • Monitor and review of claim file load, including auditing claim notes and wage statements that are returned on a timely basis.
  • Assists Injury Counselors in resolving unusual and complex issues.
  • Coaches and mentors injury counselors with advanced claim techniques.
  • Participate in settlement strategies.

Report Oversight and Analysis:

  • Accounting allocation
  • Data requests for monthly/quarterly reports
  • Renewal information
  • Actuarial Review and Audits
  • Jurisdictional Policies, claim reporting, and policy review
  • Policy Review

Back-Up for Manager-Claims (Workers’ Compensation, General Liability, Cargo & Property Claims):

  • Directs and manages claim administrative programs, including attorneys, insurance companies, brokers, third-party administrators, vendors, actuaries, claim adjustors
  • Investigates claims/incidences that may result in loss or death
  • Identify financial, safety, or security risks and prepare action plans to decrease exposures, always working on The Next Big Thing
  • Manage all financial aspects of claims – claim reserve reviews, notifications to coverage partners, to acceptance of market reimbursements
  • Promotes organization-wide understanding of risks and risk management strategies with the management teams, including claim reviews to dashboards and partnerships with Safety and Loss Prevention Teams
  • Prepare and monitor the Risk Management Budget
  • Partner with Finance (policy placement) and the Loss Prevention and Safety Director/Representatives.

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Business, Insurance, Risk Management, Claim Handling - Adjusting

Minimum Special Certifications or Technical Skills

  • Multi-Line or Workers’ Compensation Adjusting License
  • Active participation in industry professional organization (RIMS)
  • Technical proficiency in insurance strategies and application
  • Working knowledge in business law
  • Solid skills with Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Minimum Type of Experience the Job Requires

  • Retail risk/claims management experience with multiple locations
  • 5+ years or more experience in claims management, including return to work
  • Canada Workers' Compensation oversight
  • Handling and knowledge of large loss Property Claims preferred

  • Strong math skills, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills 
  • Ability to organize work efficiently and to work independently
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
