The Principal Data Scientist will develop systems and techniques for identifying business trends and challenges through complex big data analysis. You will design, develop and implement data system solutions for the organization. You will interpret results from multiple sources using techniques including statistical analysis, machine learning and data mining. You will lead scrum teams by designing architectures, breaking down tasks, and reviewing code.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for developing machine learning models, analyzing data, identifying trends, has a high degree of customer-obsession, and a track record for delivering results.

Major Activities

  • Plans, conducts and provides technical direction to one or more projects of major importance and difficulty where the complexity of the technical problems involved requires the application of advanced machine learning and data analysis knowledge.
  • Provides technical advice and recommendations to influence internal and/or external contacts.
  • Works with multifunctional teams and users to define user needs and product requirements.
  • Develop new techniques for inferring user interests from online activity
  • Develop and investigate machine learning algorithms to improve current processes
  • Analyze large amounts of Michaels historical business data to detect patterns, trends, correlations and casualties
  • Design and run A/B experiments that affect millions of customers and evaluate the impact of optimizations and communicate results to various business stakeholders
  • Writes test protocols and execute and/or manage prototype test execution for components and devices.
  • Lead design reviews and review action items.
  • Has autonomy to propose alternatives but normally follows a specified course of action
  • Acts as a mentor in the engineering organization
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Education

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering or relevant, equivalent experience

Minimum Special Certifications or technical skills

  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, and distributed data technologies (Hive, Spark)

Minimum Type of experience the job requires

  • 10 + years of industry experience, with experience in machine learning, data analysis, business analysis, and big data
  • Experience in computer vision or natural language processing is a plus

Other

  • Deep and broad knowledge of current and emerging Machine Learning technologies that affect the business
  • Expert in designing, implementing, and troubleshooting major portions of a production stack
  • Outstanding verbal, written, presentation, facilitation, and interaction skills, including ability to effectively communicate engineering issues and concepts to technical and non-technical people at multiple organization levels, required.
  • Creative thinker and problem solver, able to distill complex problems down to actionable items with innovative solutions.
  • Experience managing and leading teams through influence across geographies and disciplines.
  • Strong track record of growing and influencing others, working with all levels of senior leadership.
