Job Description

It takes powerful technology to connect our brands and partners with an audience of nearly 900 million. Whether you’re looking to write mobile app code, engineer the servers behind our massive ad tech stacks, or develop algorithms to help us process trillions of data points a day, what you do here will have a huge impact on our business—and the world. Want in?

TechCrunch is looking for a Reporter who can work under the Venture Desk Editor and alongside a team of reporting peers to cover all things Silicon Valley. This includes coverage of investment firms, investors, entrepreneurs, and startups working to build companies and develop technologies.

Though TechCrunch covers early-stage companies, there is also a broad remit for covering news and stories in the tech ecosystem at large. The person for this role will also help to program and perhaps even moderate our live events, which draw experts on a range of issues around social, e-commerce, hardware, and software tech companies, as well as the wider ecosystem.

TechCrunch’s mission is to tell the stories behind the stories. You'll need to know how to talk with investors, founders, C-suite executives, engineers, and designers. You’ll use your knowledge and acumen to cut through the noise to intelligently inform readers what it all means and why it matters in language suitable for human beings. You will get out in the world and weave your findings into stories that lead the conversation.

Top candidates will have the ability to accurately report on multiple stories concurrently in a fast-paced media environment, to be the first and final voice on breaking news, and to place original reporting – including scoops and investigations – at the top of the priority list.

TechCrunch often covers stories weeks, months, or years before they enter mainstream consciousness. Our reporters lead coverage areas from the front. A strong proactive sensibility and good instincts will serve you well in this environment.

We need someone who:

  • Has a deep desire to report on startups and the venture dollars that make them tick

  • Can regularly publish scoops and be first to a story

  • Is adept at working with editors to produce well-reported and polished news pieces and features that provide context to the reader

  • Can write spot news

  • Can develop and write features

  • Can develop and write analysis pieces

  • Can break news first via investigative journalism

  • Can present numbers in unique and varying ways, i.e. via charts, graphs, galleries or things that haven’t even been invented yet

  • Can work across a team of editors to devise and shape editorial strategy

You:

  • Must be located in the San Francisco Bay Area

  • Have at least 3 years of experience in journalism

  • Have a proven track record of publishing stories that garner attention and make an impact

  • Know how to work with fellow writers and editors to develop stories about burgeoning trends

  • Possess knowledge of SEO basics

  • Can write headlines that capture the imagination of readers

  • Have the ability to write engagingly, without sacrificing accuracy
