Job Description

JOB SUMMARY   
The Retail Manager is responsible for every aspect of the day-to-day supervision/operation of the retail store while leading, motivating and developing staff.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Protects team members, owners, and guests by providing a safe and clean store environment.
  • Responds to complaints and concerns.
  • Manages and motivates team members to increase sales and ensure efficiency.
  • Maintains team member results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining team members; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
  • Completes operational store requirements by scheduling, assigning tasks to team members, and following up on work results.
  • Maintains operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing program, operational, and personnel policies and procedures.
  • Maintains the stability and reputation of the store by complying with legal requirements.
  • Coordinates with vendors to acquire discounts in merchandise costs and shipping.
  • Attend local tradeshows to gain knowledge of and follow trends.
  • Manages merchandise par levels.
  • Ensures availability of merchandise and service through purchase orders, approving proposed orders and contracts.
  • Formulates retail pricing by reviewing merchandise activities.
  • Determines sales promotions, authorizing clearance sales, markdowns and studying trends.
  • Conducts monthly physical inventory count for inventory control.
  • Secures merchandise by implementing security systems and safeguards.
  • Analyzes sales figures, interprets trends, and forecasts future sales volumes to maximize profits.
  • Maintains awareness of market trends in the retail industry, understanding forthcoming customer initiatives and monitors what local competitors are doing.
  • Achieves financial objectives by preparing an annual budget, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, and initiating corrective actions.
  • Completes reports and reviews operating and financial statements and departmental sales records for upper management.
  • Completes invoices and forwards to accounts payable.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational trainings.
  • Attends manager meetings to ensure all departments are aware of operational changes.
  • Works a flexible schedule during regular days, team member emergencies, and holidays.
  • Performs duties of subordinates, as needed.
  • Completes all required Company trainings and compliance courses as assigned.
  • Adheres to Company standards and maintains compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent in related field. 
EXPERIENCE
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in cash handling or retail field required.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience in the retail field required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position spends the majority of the time (50% or more) achieving organization objectives, often through the coordinate achievements of subordinate staff.  A portion of the time may be spent performing individual tasks related similar to those performed by direct reports, but primary duties are supervisory or organizational-goal related.  Analyzes and resolves problems, determines work techniques, monitors for regulatory compliance, maintains production, interprets and creates policies, and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. 
Establishes departmental goals and objectives, functions with independence, and makes decisions on matters of significant importance.  Manages human, financial, and/or physical resources; proactively assesses risk to establish systems and procedures to protect organizational assets.   Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action; develops systems to ensure subordinates adhere to policies and procedures in compliance with organizational goals and objectives. 
Specific supervisory duties include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Determines and creates policies, procedures and manuals for direct reports.
  • Establishes objectives and goals for the team; plans, organizes and manages work flow.
  • Assigns, monitors, and reviews work; evaluates direct report’s performance.
  • Recruit, interview, train, discipline, and terminate direct reports. 
  • Orientate and train direct reports.
  • Approves time records and time off requests; submits payroll for direct reports.
  • Investigates and resolves concerns and complaints.
  • Provide assistance and support; maintains a positive and professional working environment.
LICENSE & CERTIFICATIONS
  • Food Handler’s card – must be state/county-specific.
  • Alcohol Awareness Training Certification – must be state/county-specific.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
This position requires the capability to understand and follow both oral and written directions as well as knowledge and usage of correct business English and office practices.  Must be able to communicate effectively with others, analyze and resolve problems, maintain effective working relationships, and interact successfully with internal and external customers.

  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Must be of legal age to serve alcohol.
  • Must be of legal age to sell alcohol.
  • Must be of legal age to sell cigarette and/or tobacco products.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Cash handling skills (the ability to count currency, make and count back change).
