Job Description

Yahoo serves as a trusted guide for hundreds of millions of people globally, helping them achieve their goals online through our portfolio of iconic products. For advertisers, Yahoo Advertising offers omnichannel solutions and powerful data to engage with our brands and deliver results.

A little about us

Yahoo is a global media and tech company that connects people to their passions. We reach nearly 900M people around the world, bringing them closer to what they love — from finance and sports, to shopping, gaming and news — with the trusted products, content and tech that fuel their day. For partners, we provide a full-stack platform for businesses to amplify growth and drive more meaningful connections across advertising, search and media.

At Yahoo News, we are laser-focused on making discovery delightful and becoming the world’s best curator for our 35 million daily users and expanding our distribution to meet millions more users where they are. Building the best guide to the Internet (and the world) requires building the best team.

A lot about you

We are seeking a talented and experienced leader to build a team focused on visual journalism and data services. This team will drive the development of strategic data services including databases, maps and tools across a variety of topics, including weather, health and entertainment. It will be responsible for sourcing and curating third-party visual assets from our partner network and beyond, while developing a strategy for effectively using visual storytelling -- including photo, video, graphics, and illustration -- to contextualize the news and deliver deeper knowledge and delight to our users.

As the leader of this team, you will play a pivotal role in hiring a team of visual journalists, designers, data analysts, and engineers and setting priorities that will deliver user value and propel growth. Your primary objective will be to drive the development of visually engaging and informative content that provides value to users across the many products in the Yahoo ecosystem. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including editorial, product development, engineering, and data science, to create data and visually-based products and services that help our users understand the world around them and achieve their goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership: Build and lead a high-performing team of visual journalists, designers, data analysts, and engineers. Provide mentorship, guidance, and support to foster professional growth and excellence within the team.
  • Visual Journalism: Oversee the creation of compelling visual content, including photos, videos, graphics, and illustrations, that is rich and impactful.
  • Data Services: Develop and manage strategic data services, including databases, lists, and tools, that empower the editorial team to leverage data-driven insights in their reporting and content creation.
  • User Experience and Visual Design: Collaborate with product development and design teams to ensure that visual content seamlessly integrates with the overall user experience and adheres to brand guidelines.
  • Data Analysis: Utilize data analysis techniques to identify trends, patterns, and user preferences, and translate them into actionable insights for the visual team to optimize content performance.
  • Product Development: Work closely with product managers and engineers to drive the development of new features, tools, and technologies that enhance the visual storytelling capabilities of Yahoo News.
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Stay up-to-date of industry trends, emerging technologies, and user needs to identify and capitalize on new data-led opportunities that deliver value to our users and drive business growth.

Qualifications:

  • Journalism Experience: Extensive experience in journalism, with a strong understanding of news production workflows, editorial standards, and ethics.
  • Visual Design and User Experience: Proficiency in visual design principles, user experience design, and a keen eye for aesthetics. Demonstrated ability to create visually compelling content that engages and informs users.
  • Data Analysis: Solid background in data analysis techniques and tools, with the ability to extract actionable insights from complex datasets.
  • Product Development and Engineering: Familiarity with product methodologies and experience working collaboratively with development teams to deliver innovative solutions.
  • Leadership and Team Management: Proven track record of effectively leading, coaching and managing cross-functional teams, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to think strategically and identify opportunities for leveraging data and visual storytelling to enhance user experience and achieve business objectives.
  • Entrepreneurial Mindset: Strong entrepreneurial spirit with a passion for identifying and driving the development of new data-led opportunities that add value to users and contribute to business growth.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, including executives, editors, and technical teams.

If you are a visionary leader who thrives in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, values diversity and enjoys solving hard problems with smart people, we would love to hear from you. Join us at Yahoo News and make a significant impact on how users understand and engage with the news.
