Under the general direction of the Emergency Department Director, and the direct supervision and guidance of a registered nurse, the paramedic is responsible for providing quality technical care to each patient in the Emergency Department.

They will work as part of a team with the Registered Nurse accountable for the patient care assignment. Specific tasks can be delegated by the RN or MD. Provide service across the lifespan (infants, toddlers, preschool, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics). Major responsibilities for this position are: safety and emergency procedures, documentation, patient care tasks and procedures, unit support, communication/customer service, safety, and professional development. Essential performance factors include: teamwork, attention to detail, oral/written communication/presentation, and technical proficiency.

  1. Provides assistant functions to patients (personal care, ambulation, transports).
  2. Performs skills within scope of practice and as approved by Kentucky Board of EMS and hospital policy
  3. Gathers data related to patient status (i.e., vital signs, I&O).
  4. Documents care given and data gathered. Reports findings to nurse.
  5. Assists in clerical management of nursing unit.
  6. Monitors emergency communication systems and reports to nursing staff / MD.
  7. Responds to legal implications of the ED practice.
  8. Supports the hospital and nursing department philosophy, goals and objectives.

    Specific excluded duties:
  1. Triage
  2. Providing discharge teaching
  3. Blood Administration
  4. Antibiotic Administration
  5. Assuming primary caregiver role

Job Requirements

  1. Education:  Current Kentucky certified EMT-P.
  1.  CPR, ACLS and PALS or PEPP to perform within scope of paramedic practice.

C     Experience:  A minimum of two years pre-hospital paramedic experience is preferred.  Successful completion of an orientation program and 90 day probation    period.   Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to assist in providing care to patients and families ranging from infancy through geriatrics.

  1. Special Qualifications:  Good communication skills; computer skills good; ability to work with others as a team to ensure quality patient care.
  2. On-Call Availability:  Will accept on call assignments for regularly scheduled shifts when acuity and/or census indicates need. Will be available to report to facility within 30 minutes of notification.  This status will be determined by House Supervisor, Clinical Coordinator or Director.
