Performs receptionist, registration, and clerical duties associated with direct and scheduled patient admissions.

Essential Functions

To perform this job, an individual must perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Ensures that all necessary demographic, billing, and clinical information is obtained and entered in the registration system with timeliness and accuracy.
Distributes and explains forms, documents, and educational handouts to patients or family members.
Meets with patient or patient's caregiver before or after admission to exchange necessary information and documentation. Provides explanation of process and addresses concerns and questions.
Communicates with admitting physician's office, nursing unit staff, and/or other appropriate personnel regarding admission to exchange necessary information and determine placement.
Verifies insurance benefits and obtains precertification/authorization as necessary. Determines and accepts required payments, including co-pays and deductibles, or refers to financial counselors for follow up.
Communicates with patients and guarantors regarding procedures, insurance and financial matters, copays and deductibles as necessary
Documents in the facility’s computer system the actions taken including but not limited to insurance and financial transactions as well as events
Verifies patient insurance benefits and obtains pre-certifications/authorizations as necessary. Determines and accepts required payments, including co-pays and deductibles and acts as patient financial counselor as needed for proper follow up collection activities

Job Requirements

Minimum Education Required

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Required Skills
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Customer service experience a plus

Intermediate computer experience

Intermediate data analytics and MS Excel skills

Intermediate clinical knowledge of ICD 10 and billing codes

Willingness to float between different areas such as the ED, Surgery Center, Skilled Nursing Unit and Outpatient Admitting often Preferred Skills          
Acute care registration experience preferred         
History of collecting patient pays, insurance verification
