Purpose:

Athene is seeking a highly talented and motivated engineer to lead efforts to scale our team’s ability to support critical production and greenfield technologies. We are looking for a Database Engineer to join our growing team. You will be responsible for creating and maintaining open source datastores such as MySQL, Postgres and Redis. You’ll get to design automated, flexible systems capable of scaling to meet the growing demand of the database platform. You’ll provide guidance on schema design, query optimization and learn the detailed data requirements of our software stack. We believe in using automation to increase reliability and efficiency, so you’ll have the opportunity to use your programming skills to automate the administration of our database systems. Athene is also quickly ramping up our cloud capability within AWS. You will be part of a cloud COE team representing App DBAs across the organization in the governance of database resources within the cloud.

Accountabilities:

  • Author tools that reliably manage infrastructure. 
  • Build, automate and deploy highly available, robust, resilient and secure database solutions.
  • Collaborate with Architects, Software Engineers and System Administrators on database and system optimizations.
  • Develop and manage framework/tools to package and rollout infrastructure changes leveraging a variety of languages including: Java, JavaScript, Python, SQL and PL/SQL.
  • Investigate database tuning settings and query changes needed to improve performance, availability and reliability.
  • Investigate production issues and perform root cause analysis.
  • Work in conjunction with multiple teams to make sure that the infrastructure and the applications that depend on it work harmoniously together.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • 5+ years of professional development experience.
  • Champion of DevOps best practices; excellent software / database design skills, code quality and attention to detail.
  • Experience implementing automated tools and frameworks.
  • Experience in Docker, Kubernetes and Jenkins.
  • Experience with deployment and maintenance of software in Production Data Centers; must have excellent verbal communication and technical documentation skills.
  • Solid experience with SQL/PLSQL, Python, Java.
  • Specific experience with server-side technologies, preferably Python (including Pyramid, Django), MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Redis, and DB2.
  • Strong passion for building tools and systems that enable other Developers on the team to build great things;  ability to learn quickly and deliver high quality code in a fast-paced, Agile team environment.
  • Working knowledge of Puppet, Ansible, Chef or other configuration management tools (we use Flyway for Database Migrations).
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience; AWS certification is a plus.
