Evaluates and treats patient populations for swallowing, speech-language, cognition and therapy needs. The Speech Language Pathologist administers, organizes and plans the activities of the department to ensure effective speech pathology evaluation and treatment for inpatients, outpatients and rehab patients of all age groups and cultural backgrounds; exhibiting a speech, language, hearing or swallowing disorder; and provides diagnostic and therapeutic services.

Essential Functions

To perform this job, an individual must perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Provides patient/family counseling, maintains systematic records in accordance with professional, JCAHO, and state/local requirements.
Maintains quality care for all patients through interaction with hospital personnel in a coordinated, comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach; provides assistance where communication barriers exist due to speech/language disabilities to enable each individual to reach his/her maximum level of independence
Provides evaluation and set up of treatment programs for all patients referred to Speech Language Pathology; provides speech language therapy treatment to referred patients; writes and reviews patient progress reports, including charting and reports to referring physicians;
Provides correct statistic and billing information for Speech Language Therapy patients; assesses and manages swallowing disorders in coordination with other departments; assists with preparation of and monitors departmental budget; attends hospital and community meetings as appropriate and serves on various committees; develops, implements, maintains, and reviews policies and procedures for department services, including administrative, clinical and CQI and prepares any necessary reports; orients and trains new and continuing staff regarding scope and needs of the Speech Language Therapy Department and participates in continuing education programs to enhance skills and knowledge
Trains, supervises and evaluates graduate speech pathology students; supports and actively participates in hospital quality-assurance and in-service programs; and, performs other duties as assigned.
Performs and documents initial and ongoing assessments of patient's condition.
Designs and implements a plan of care which is appropriate to problems identified and involves the patient and family.
Educates and counsels patients and families regarding treatment plans and progress.
Plans and/or assists with patient discharge from therapy services.
Supervises activities of clinical fellows, students, and other support personnel.
Develops and implements a quality monitoring plan
Develops and implements a quality improvement plan
Teaches and mentors all staff, assuring competence
Participates in recruitment and hiring of new SLPs
Works cooperatively with other staff, directors, and leaders to demonstrate a high level of professionalism
Monitors productivity on a weekly basis with goal of being +/- 10%

Job Requirements

Minimum Education
Graduate of an Accredited Masters Program

License(s) Required Upon Hire

Licensed by the State of Arizona

Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card must be under way on 1st day of hire  

Certification(s) Required Within 30 Days of Hire

Basic Life Support (BLS)

Minimum Work Experience Required   

Work experience in acute care setting during externship

Required Skills
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
